Fort Collins is a unique biking community in the US. The City has adopted an Active Mode Plan that is focusing efforts and funding toward building a transportation network that makes it easy and safe to use all modes of transportation. This makes communities stronger, more resilient, more inclusive and healthier. The Netherlands has successfully created a road environment where people on foot or on bikes are as safe as people in cars. This is an incredible achievement. Because of this we hired a Dutch planning firm, called Mobycon, to help us with the infrastructure and network design in Montava. Montava has embraced bicycle and pedestrian priority from day one as the primary goal of New Urbanism in creating a walkable/bikeable community. Can urban intersections be designed in such a way where motor traffic, cycling, and walking flow smoothly and where the potential conflicts of these very different types of interactions are made less complicated and less dangerous? We believe that the Dutch have proven that answer to be “yes”. Intersections are most important in making cycling safer and more accessible. They can be the weakest link in the chain that is your journey and one nasty junction can put people off cycling.

Come join us as we build and test a Dutch inspired design for two key intersections in Montava. October 30th from 1-3pm in the Front Range Community College parking lot at 4616 S. Shields St. There will be free snacks supplied by Elevations Credit Union, free drink coupons from Lima Coffee for all participants and Tap Truck for non alcoholic refreshments.
